Dear James and Mary Lou,
We are experiencing another dry fall here in central Texas. As Jed and I were sorting the cows getting ready to put out bulls and A.I., I felt compelled to write you to let you know that once again our B3R cows are withstanding all that Mother Nature can throw at them.
As I have shared with you several times over the past five years, the cows we purchased from the B3R are heading into the breeding season in good condition. Meanwhile, our commercial cattle out of other bloodlines are in noticeably worse condition.
September 2009 ended nearly 18 months with little or no rainfall. It was one of the worst dry spells we have experienced over 10 plus years of dry weather. As I have told you on several occasions, the long history that you have raising easy doing, highly productive cattle is certainly paying off for us. During this extended dry period, not only did the cattle we purchase from you hold condition, but they also raised a 90% calf crop with only protein supplement and dry native grass (what there was of it) and at no time did we feed hay.
I suppose what I am trying to say is keep up the good work. In this time of rising feed prices, an animal that not only survives but actually does well during rough times is a valuable asset to a commercial cattleman trying to make a profit.
Many folks give lip service to raising cattle that are productive and efficient—you guys actually do it. Minnie Lou spent years developing the right kind of cattle and now you are continuing this work and I thank you for it.
Sincerely,
Steve C. Haverlah
